Those are some good dudes. Joe Donovan, Doug McElvein, Van Vance, Wayne Perkey, Jack Fox, Milton Metz, and I stood for that photo in 1993. They're all outstanding broadcasters who helped maintain WHAS Radio's legendary status as one of America's giants in news/talk. Joe and Milton are gone. Doug McElvein was on the radio last month and can be found in an earlier post on this website. The other fellows will all sit for interviews in the near future. I've been speaking with one prominent WHAS voice every week leading up to the station's 100th birthday in July 2022. I LOVED catching up with my friend @terrymeiners on @840WHAS radio today. We talked about family, @JudeRedfield, #Covid_19 my life in tv news and my

The Kentucky Wildcats jumped from #31 to #16 in the Associated Press poll after a hard fought victory over #10 Florida. It was Kentucky's first home victory over the Gators since 1986. Street party couch burnings went on until the wee hours. UK is now 5-0 and welcoming a struggling LSU squad into Kroger Field on Saturday night. In a rare departure from oddsmaker behavior, Kentucky is a 2 point favorite. Finish the play. Finish the game. Finish what you start. β³ Wade Hampton golf course is prettier than Augusta. Fight me.
I just spent a few days on the Wade Hampton golf club course near Cashiers, North Carolina. This Tom Fazio design is stunning with every sight line. The fairways and greens are exceedingly challenging and immaculate. I've been lucky enough to play Augusta National on consecutive days, too, and I found the Wade Hampton experience superior. Augusta has incredible golf history but WADE is numbingly beautiful. Wow! See all of the Wade Hampton course with hole-by-hole descriptions here Enjoyed meeting @CJBunge at Wade Hampton golf club in North Carolina yesterday. He saw my @UofLFootball hat and said βIβm from Lexington and fighting the urge to twist my hand.β π I assured him that it was quite OK. Good guy! Incredible golf track! β³οΈ
Live in the moment, twitter miners
I hate it when they mine old tweets. May 22, 2019 pic.twitter.com/iSY4MGiqTa β Dean Skuza (@DeanSkuza) September 22, 2021 Information evolves. Science evolves. Changes are applied. Please stop with the gotcha police, people. Masks became necessary to stem the spread of COVID. Human brainpower leads to life improvements. A century ago, life expectancy was almost half of what modern medicine provides today. Don't listen to conspiracy theorists or fake news slingers. They'll get you killed long before your true expiration date. Politicians and professionals who donβt call out misinformation and lead people with the truth are part of the problem, not part
Boomer heroes are fighting off The Grim Reaper
The recent passing of Charlie Watts shines a spotlight on the inevitable closing of the lives of the world's original rock and roll generation. It's a sad reality that a relatively small group of people created a collection of music that still thrives more than a half century later. And within the next 20 years, most of them will be dead. Before we catch up, let's look back. Just after Woodstock in June 1969, young music heroes Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, and other members of Jefferson Airplane appeared on The Dick Cavett Show. Young stars fueled by idealism. So cute. It's now 52 years later. Let's check in on some of these same performers to see
WE’LL DO IT LIVE! π² Lighten up, Francis!
I've seen it all during TV live shots. Sometimes people grab you or shout obscenities while you are either on the air or preparing to be. You just have to roll with it. Focused on restoring city safety, David Nicholson jumps into the race for Louisville mayor
The race for Louisville mayor just took a major swerve with the addition of David Nicholson, the Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk. Sound familiar? His signature in on your driver's license. Nicholson is well-connected to the judicial and law enforcement systems with over 40 years of public service. A grieving family spoke at today's campaign launch, asking Nicholson to end the scourge of gun violence that has taken their 19-year-old son. Nicholson's campaign is based on the restoration of safety on Louisville's streets as the city suffers from the worst homicide rates in its history. Current Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer was elected as an outsider with no government experience but success in business funded by his family. He seems to have few answers as
With Charles Booker jumping to the big leagues, who’ll be the next mayor of Louisville?
Former state representative Charles Booker built an energized following during 2020's racial reckoning protests by telling his story of struggles and hopes. But once he steps outside Jefferson County, people wonder if he is just howling to a smattering of lefties. So why is he running for the U.S. Senate instead of sliding directly into the Louisville mayor's office? Hard to tell. Mr. Booker's plan is to continue growing his base "from the hood to the holler" to unseat Senator Rand Paul. Pundits claim a Booker victory is a real long shot in Trump loving Kentucky, but Charles claims "we proved them wrong." No one has been proved wrong yet. A Booker victory would become that proof but can it actually happen? The voters will
My ill-advised shot! π 20 years ago, Courier-Journal editor David Hawpe taught me a valuable lesson
Courier-Journal legend David Hawpe has passed away at age 78. We had lots of laughs over the years talking media, politics, and all things Kentucky. We both served on advisory boards for the College of Communications and Information at the University of Kentucky. Hawpe, the editor of Kentucky's Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, taught me a valuable lesson in January 2002 by ripping my ass on the editorial page of the Sunday morning Courier-Journal. I wrote a blog post mocking livid UK fans in eastern Kentucky who were heaping scorn on Rick Pitino for taking the Louisville head coach job. A few days after I posted the sketch, the Lexington Herald Leader wrote a scathing front page piece entitled "Web site parody
