AUDIO 📻 Ky. Attorney General Andy Besmear appeared on WHAS Radio with me to talk about Louisville’s murder rate, anonymity for young felons, cops in JCPS schools, Gov. Matt Bevin involvement with the UofL board firing Tom Jurich, the Western Union settlement, and more #kypolitics

Lamar Jackson kept Louisville from a complete crash-and-burn during its parade of basketball and academic scandals. Thank God for Lamar. His complete domination of UK in the regular season finale was brilliant.
— Will Clark (@WClark840WHAS) November 25, 2017
And Lamar’s brilliance shone all season.
— Bobby Petrino (@CoachPetrinoUL) November 22, 2017
======= My prediction from earlier in the week =======
Saturday marks the end of Lamar’s regular season career at UofL. My prediction is that Lamar has another 400 yard game (throwing and running). Final score: Louisville 45, Kentucky 28
Thank you, Lamar. At least the Heisman Trophy voters got it right last year. They’re ignoring Lamar this year and it only drives him harder.
READ: An NFL writer reviews Lamar’s strengths and weaknesses.
Bowen’s scholarship to attend UofL remains valid but he was told he will never play basketball for the Cardinals after the FBI revealed secret meetings about shoe company money being funneled to his family.
Johnson was terminated likely as another illustration by the school to the NCAA that it was cleaning house of the entire Rick Pitino leadership team, save for new acting head basketball coach David Padgett and a few support staffers.
Rick Pitino tells me he is completely finished with coaching although he told ESPN earlier this week that (when he is proven innocent in the shoe company scandal) if any school approaches him about a coaching position, he will consider returning to the game.
Tom Jurich said on my radio show that several schools have contacted him but he will stay in the shadows for now.
With Jurich, Pitino, most of the assistant coaches, and several administrative departures, it appears that board chair David Grissom has only one immediate target remaining: football coach Bobby Petrino. Many suspect that Grissom – urged by Papa John’s founder John Schnatter – wants to completely clean house without forcing interim president Postel to get his hands dirty. That would also mean that David Padgett, originally part of the Pitino team, will be jettisoned by Grissom’s board next April after completing the current season.
It’s Grissom’s show and Postel’s duty to kiss his ring in order to earn the official title of university president. Postel can claim he has nothing to do with these massive changes but in-house emails say otherwise.
For Pitino to land a 5-star like Brian Bowen, who hadn’t been on the radar screen, took Cards fans by surprise. Then when the FBI dropped its investigative bombshell citing payments to Bowen’s family, the massive meltdown from “scandal fatigue” crushed the UofL program and its fan base.
Rick Pitino on WHAS Radio with Terry Meiners, June 5, 2017
But why kill off Tom Jurich, the man who built UofL’s athletic department into America’s top growing program?
No one can answer that question other than board chair David Grissom, and he’s not talking.
There is a paper trail indicating that Grissom and interim president Dr. Greg Postel have been slowly choking out the University of Louisville Athletic Association board, a support system in place for 30+ years. The plan would be for athletics leadership to report directly to the school’s board of trustees (see: Grissom).
And so now all UofL can do is wait for the final determination from the NCAA on the school’s appeal over sanctions from a 2015 dormitory stripper scandal. The shoe company meltdown came in 2017 while the NCAA was mulling over punishment for the earlier Level 1 infractions amounting to “improper benefits” for recruits and student athletes.
Will the NCAA be placated to spare the 2013 National Championship Banner? Odds say it will get the same treatment that Bowen and Johnson received and Petrino is about to receive. History.

Eight indictments have been filed in the FBI investigation into the funneling of shoe company money to financial advisors and AAU basketball coaches who benefit from student athletes. More indictments are expected later in the week.
Among those indicted by a federal grand jury is suspended Auburn coach Chuck Person, and Rashan Michel, a high end Atlanta clothier. Person is accused of taking bribe money to steer basketball players toward certain financial advisors. Michel is involved with various seedy characters who swarm around recruits and AAU leagues.
Michel has been loosely connected to former University of Kentucky personal like assistant coach Orlando Antigua, UK stars Andrew and Aaron Harrison, and Friend-of-Cal William “WorldWide Wes” Wesley. There’s probably nothing to it but UK always draws the spotlight.
The University of Louisville was fingered right away when assistant coach Jordan Fair was recorded in a Vegas hotel room acknowledging awareness of adidas routing money to the father of 5-star recruit Brian Bowen. Discussions about payments to the family of another UofL recruit also took place in the room.
Fair has been fired along with head basketball coach Rick Pitino and athletics director Tom Jurich. Nonetheless, no arrests or indictments have been issued for any UofL personal.
An attorney for Brian Bowen claims “investigation impediments” have been cleared so that UofL can now decide whether to reinstate him to the roster.
Meanwhile, the University of Louisville basketball season has launched. Here’s a Courier Journal photographer’s tweet from tonight’s exhibition game vs. Bellarmine.
Former University of Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich visited my radio show to talk about his firing, the callous termination letter, UofL’s financial stability, FBI investigation, NCAA appeal, supervision of Rick Pitino, Mark Jurich’s career, adidas contract, and more.
Following our interview, news broke that the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office released “investigative impediments” on Brian Bowen, setting up a potential return to the UofL basketball team. The university would have to conduct its own investigation to clear Bowen, but if the FBI can’t see a path where the player was aware of his father getting money from adidas, it is hard to imagine that UofL’s investigation could drill down further than federal authorities.
If Bowen is reinstated, it strengthens legal standings for both Tom Jurich and Rick Pitino if they file wrongful termination lawsuits.
Got invited back on Outside the Lines. Once again, I appreciate getting to represent the city of Louisville on these ESPN updates on UofL’s meltdown. This time the matter at hand was Tom Jurich’s reaction to the scathing termination letter sent by Dr. Greg Postel.
Per usual, I was marginally lucid. Dude, I’m trying to cram a lot into a tight space.
He also talked about “Coach 1” Jordan Fair, controlling his employees, David Padgett’s new Cardinals team, board chairman David Grissom & the board of trustees’ agenda, severance money for both Pitino and Jurich, his adidas lawsuit, thoughts for Cards fans, and much more #L1C4
From the Courier-Journal: “Did Pitino throw Jordan Fair under the bus?”
Pop the popcorn. Here is the entire half hour conversation.
Rick Pitino and I have had some fascinating, insightful radio interviews over the years. Will he ever return to my microphones for another long form conversation? Here’s how our chat ended.
Meiners: “Are you going to watch University of Louisville basketball games or any university athletic pursuits?”
Pitino: “I’ll be rooting for all the coaches at U of L. I’ll be rooting for my players, David Padgett, I’ll be rooting for them every single game. I want them to go on and win the national championship … David is one of my players. I think the world of him. I hope he has great success and certainly nothing but praying that they go on and have great years.”
Meiners: “Coach Pitino, great talking to you, we’ll do it again down the road.”
Pitino: “Terry, probably we won’t, but you’ve been a good friend and I thank you for having me. I’ll say goodbye to you for a long time, and you be well and say hello to your beautiful wife.”
Meiners: “Wait a minute, am I supposed to lose your phone number now? Don’t say that.”
Pitino: “No, no, I’m talking about professionally on the air. You know you’re always welcome.”
Meiners: “Thanks coach.”
Pitino: “Take care.”
#WeTheFuture is a sea of hope that the Cards will rise again. Nonetheless, a hearty thank you and applause to Rick Pitino, Tom Jurich, and a vast collection of coaches who’ve raised UofL athletics success to unprecedented heights.
Under Vince Tyra’s leadership, let’s trudge forward with honor to experience whatever tomorrow brings.
Thanks for an incredible ride, Tom.
Tom Jurich called me last night to respond to the University of Louisville termination letter. More to come today at a 3:30 press conference at the offices of his attorneys.
Rick Pitino and I will talk about his firing and the Jurich termination letter at 5:35 PM today on 840WHAS Radio.
I spoke about the Jurich call with Renee Murphy at WHAS11 and then with Rachel Platt on Great Day Live…
…then to Bob Ley on ESPN’s Outside the Lines
— Outside The Lines (@OTLonESPN) October 25, 2017
Plus there were 840WHAS radio chats with Tony Cruise
and Leland Conway…then to WKRD to speak with Nick Coffey on “The Red Zone”
And I closed out the day on my own show interviewing Rick Pitino for 30 minutes. It was one of the most newsworthy days in my 40 year career.
One day after the University of Louisville fired Tom Jurich, the athletics department sent this letter to all fans via social media. Although new acting AD Vince Tyra (above) didn’t sign the note, it’s from him.
To our fans,
You are our heartbeat and our spirit. Your passion provides our student-athletes with an intangible strength to dream without limits and achieve the loftiest of goals. You lift them up — to give their best on the field, in the community and in the classroom. Your gift of loyalty, emotion and appreciation drives us and we wanted to reach out to simply express our gratitude.
This is certainly a challenging time in our program’s history, but your unwavering support empowers all of us to push forward in the face of adversity. We are working diligently to shore up our men’s basketball program and are confident that David Padgett and his staff will represent you and our university well this season.
You rejoiced in good times and have been stalwart in the tough moments. Our student-athletes have never needed your support more than they do right now.
True to form, as Louisville Cardinals, we will persevere.
