My St. Stephen Martyr boys were perfect. We didn't all get straight As. Some of us sassed teachers and earned detention. Others screwed up in their personal lives but when it came to football, we were dialed in. We practiced hard every afternoon. If Coach Don Kalbhin thought we were slouching, he'd order our dads to line up their cars and turn on the headlights so we could keep practicing after sunset. Our dads deferred to the coach's wishes. The reward unfolded through the course of the season. Our little football team was perfect in 1968. We beat all challengers, including the Holy Family team listed below to win the Toy Bowl. It would be the only championship experience many of

We almost didn’t see “I can’t even look at you!”
On a visit to Indianapolis, Peyton Manning explained how his famous Saturday Night Live kids football sketch almost never happened. "I want him to hit my kid in the face." ?Peyton Manning shares how that United Way SNL skit almost didn't happen: pic.twitter.com/gdI6SB6Ybw— Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) August 30, 2018 Thank God for that one parent. Comedy gold was birthed. Kids and famous athletes. Always comedy gold. When in doubt, ask somebody.#TOURVault pic.twitter.com/RQ9IUbqhrf— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 30, 2018
America’s thoroughbred racing ambassador John Asher dies at 62
John Asher was elated to take his family to Disneyworld. Asher, his wife Dee, and their precious grandbabies were excited to explore the Magic Kingdom. They flew from Louisville on Sunday and planned to start their Disney adventure the next morning. John told his wife that he felt bad and was transported to an area hospital. Asher suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The funeral and visitation plans were just released. Asher was a beloved spokesperson for Churchill Downs for over 20 years. He'd made countless friends as a news anchor and reporter for WHAS Radio. Asher also worked for WAVG (formerly WAVE) before moving over to WHAS. His ready smile, endless knowledge of music, politics, pop culture,
“You bet I’m running” – Gov. Matt Bevin tees up his re-election battle with Andy Beshear, et al
Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin finally burst the bubble by declaring that he will indeed run for reelection. I've asked him more than 10 times in radio interviews if he would re-up to solidify Republican party plans for 2019. His response was that he would not let "the people across the aisle" dictate his schedule. At last night's Lincoln Dinner in Lexington, the news spilled across all of the aisles. Governor Bevin wants to stay in office for a second term. "Buckle up, because the next five years are going to be something to watch." At the @KYGOP Lincoln Dinner in Lexington, @GovMattBevin announced his intention to run for re-election in 2019. pic.twitter.com/zqnjGGEufk— Garrett Wymer (@GarrettWKYT) August 26, 2018 There's
Film: a media coronation of Barack Obama bolstered the impossible quest of John McCain and Sarah Palin
On the death of American hero John McCain, former WHAS talk show host John Ziegler reissued his 2009 MEDIA MALPRACTICE film. It's Ziegler's comprehensive takedown of partisan media skewing news during the 2008 presidential campaign. With all of the understandable talk this weekend about John McCain & Sarah Palin, I decided to post a totally free copy of my film "Media Malpractice" about that election to refresh memories of what really went down then. It seems like most have forgottenhttps://t.co/bQOB1o2abC— John Ziegler (@Zigmanfreud) August 26, 2018
unplugged: the demo tape for John Lennon’s “Imagine”
John Lennon. A piano. Imagine. Imagine: The Ultimate Collection is a 3-disc collection of Lennon music due this fall. One of the discs contains stripped-down song demos like the one above. Louisville's iconic son once tried to sing with Lennon's up-and-coming band in 1964. Imagine that, too.

Justin Thomas crushes glass on Jimmy Fallon
Last year's PGA Championship and FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas plays a pretty strong ad lib game, too. JT was slinging sharp quips with NBC Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon while playing a game of FaceBreakers. FedEx was pitching a gift to the St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis and used the game as a promo. Fallon initially called Justin onstage to talk golf but it was mostly throwing bouquets at Tiger Woods. Yeah, whatevs. Nonetheless, Justin showed some chops as a quick thinking interview subject, a rarity among pro golfers, especially the numbingly dry Woods. And would have guessed that Fallon is taller than Thomas? Fallon's favorite gag brother is Justin Timberlake. Can we soon see a JT vs
Stole an airplane? Everything is peachy until the screws break loose!
Seattle baggage handler Richard Russell stole a dual prop commercial plane, took it for a joyride, toyed with air traffic controllers, and then nosedived it into an island to kill himself. ATC recording here. On his family: "It's going to disappoint (loved ones) to hear that I did this. I've got a few screws loose, I guess. Never really knew it until now." "I'm going to try to do a barrel roll, and if that goes good then I'm just gonna go nose down and call it a night." He gave his life to be in the news cycle for 48 hours. Honoring grandpa...yeah OK. Bye, Felicia. Dude, we've got enough daily crazy on the earth to make your joyride just another blip
